Considering that this is the land of Hollywood, where plastic surgeons, flashy cars, and shops catering to every form of finery abound, the idea of “l’art pour l’art” may seem rather incongruous. However, it is this appreciation for aesthetics that engenders a vibrant art scene, with museums and galleries smattered all across the city. Actually, the fact that there is no one, central art hub may be why the presence of the arts does not seem to take a more visible role among the innumerable attractions in the city. As art communities tend to thrive in places where patrons can enjoy strolling through a neighborhood of galleries and art spaces, Los Angeles, in all its vastness, is known as a city of drivers who know no neighborhoods. There is so much to see, however, that a map and a pricey tank of gas is all you need to enjoy what the City of Angels has to offer. Among the many museums, the most well-known include the Getty Center, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the MOCA at California Plaza, the Norton Simon Museum, and the Huntington Library, Art Galleries, and Botanical Gardens. Among the hundreds of galleries, the Gagosian and Regen Projects are the most famous, while other locations such as Chungking Road in Chinatown and Bergamont Station in Santa Monica also provide for a great array of choices. Surprisingly, Culver City has gained recent notoriety for its burgeoning art scene along La Cienega Boulevard. Galleries such as The Project, Blum & Poe, and Anna Helwing provide a rare opportunity to view the works of myriad artists at an easy, pedestrian pace. The choices for art enthusiasts to enjoy the all that is new and noteworthy in the art world is as vast as the options for schooling for art students. With the great number of universities, as well as the nationally recognized Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles is a wonderful place to pursue studies in the arts and, if you’re so inclined, to catch a movie, a wave, or even a tan.
