Attending Art School in Baltimore

Baltimore, Maryland is one of the most distinctive and culturally interesting cities in the United States. A port town bred of America’s industrial underbelly, Baltimore is equal parts fine art and seedy grit, a sort of amalgam of industrial Detroit, Michigan, and artsy Austin, Texas. It’s this highly eccentric social element that makes Baltimore an incredible place to pursue an art education. Art, after all, is bred of wild, untamed inspiration and Baltimore is filled with just that (a fact to which any John Waters movie can attest). The most notable art institution in Baltimore is the Maryland Institute College of Art, which houses several programs in a diverse array of disciplines. It’s not just painting and printmaking here; MICA is best known for its programs in experimental animation, interactive media and environmental design, programs that truly stretch to the broad reaches of any imagination. And let’s not forget Baltimore’s geographic benefits. Situated just near the Chesapeake Bay and a short train, car or bus ride from Washington D.C. (and a not-that-much longer one to New York City), the city is graced with a central location; water, mountains and several urban areas are all within a relatively short distance, giving the prospective art student a great number of options for escape and inspiration.
